Introduction

This policy explains how we at Wizard of Laws® protect your personal information. If you have a specific question on this subject you can contact us at ask.the@wizardoflaws.ca. You can read more about your privacy rights in Canada at the following website.

Scope of This Policy

This policy concerns individuals and businesses who use this website. We may need some personal information to provide legal information. For instance, if you ask us to write a will we need information about you and your assets.

Our Commitment

We commit to:

    • Tell you when we need personal information and why; and
    • Only use such information for the stated purpose or as the law requires.

Our work may require us to share some of your personal information with other professionals; for instance, other lawyers. We will tell you if this the case and ensure that they understand and respect your privacy rights.

Cookies

A cookie is a small piece of data the website sends to your web browser. Cookies collect anonymous information, such as the number of visitors and pages they visit. We use cookies to learn how visitors use the website and how to improve it.

We use session, persistent and third party cookies, including Google Analytics cookies, to:

    • Enable certain functions of the website;
    • Provide analytics;
    • Store your preferences;
    • Enable advertisements delivery, including behavioural advertisement.

We don’t:

    • Share personal data with Google;
    • Collect any personal information from you unless we need it and you supply it;
    • Store your personal information on our servers except when necessary for the functioning of the website (for example, the information you enter when you leave a comment).

We may share generic aggregated demographic information not linked to any personal information with trusted business partners, affiliates and advertisers.

If you leave a comment on our site you may choose to save your name and email in cookies. These are for your convenience, so you don’t have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you don’t want cookies to be stored on your computer, you can delete and disable them. Please check the user guide for your web browser on how to do this.

Embedded Content From Other Websites

Pages on this website may include embedded content (e.g., videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites acts the same as if you visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third party tracking and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Plugins

1. Sassy Social Share

This website uses the Sassy Social Share plugin (SSS), which is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by the EU.

SSS does not track any user data. However, if it depends on a third party service, they might track user data. This can happen in two ways:

    • Embedded widgets: SSS has features to integrate embedded widgets as-is from third party services like Facebook Like, Facebook Recommend, Twitter Tweet official buttons. These widgets will likely become GDPR compliant before May 25, 2019.
    • Third-party APIs/connections: SSS sends requests to third party APIs through the website visitor’s web browser to fetch information like social shares and social comment count. This request made by web browser may include IP address, which the third it’s requested from can see. This API request doesn’t include any personal data of the website user other than the IP address.

SSS doesn’t store any data on the service provider’s servers, nor does the service provider share any data from SSS with any third party. SSS runs entirely on this website and stores the data in the database of this website.

SSS loads scripts from this website with the exception of third party embedded widgets like Facebook Like/Recommend official button, Twitter tweet official button and Facebook Comments, which require SSS to load scripts from the servers of relevant service.

2. Facebook Comments

We embed Facebook Comments plugin to allow you to leave comment at our website using your Facebook account. This plugin may collect your IP address, your web browser User Agent, store and retrieve cookies on your browser, embed additional tracking and monitor your interaction with the commenting interface, including correlating your Facebook account with whatever action you take within the interface (such as “liking” someone’s comment, replying to other comments), if you are logged into Facebook. For more information about how this data may be used, please see Facebook’s data privacy policy.

3. Facebook Likes/Shares

This website uses the official Facebook Likes/Shares counter, which shows the number of likes and shares a page has received on Facebook. This widget may collect your IP address, your web browser User Agent, store and retrieve cookies on your browser, embed additional tracking, and monitor your interaction with the widget, including correlating your Facebook account with whatever action you take within the widget (such as “liking/sharing/recommending” our webpage), if you are logged in to Facebook. For more information about how this data may be used, please see Facebook’s data privacy policy.

4. Google Analytics

The website uses Google Analytics to track social shares on it. Google automatically collect and store certain information in their server logs which includes device event information such as crashes, system activity, hardware settings, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your request and referral URL, cookies that may uniquely identify your browser or your Google Account, in accordance with their data privacy policy.

5. Twitter Tweet Official Button

The website uses a Twitter Tweet widget. As a result, our website makes requests to Twitter’s servers for you to be able to tweet our webpages using your Twitter account. These requests make your IP address visible to Twitter, who may use it in accordance with their data privacy policy.

6. LinkedIn Share Official Button

The website uses a LinkedIn Share widget to allow you to share our webpages on LinkedIn. These requests may track your IP address in accordance with their data privacy policy.

How Long We Retain Your Data

This website retains comments and their metadata indefinitely, so it can automatically recognize and approve further comments instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

Your Rights Over Your Data

You can request:

    • A file of the personal data we hold about you if you provided us with data or left comments;
    • That we erase any personal data we hold about you. (This does not include any data we must keep for administrative, legal or security purposes.)

Spam Detection

An automated spam detection service may check visitor comments.

Please Ask Us

Please ask us if you want to know what personal information we have about you. We will tell you unless the law prevents us.

If you give us your contact information, we will keep it so we can contact you in the future. Please ask us if you want us to delete it.
